Up for your consideration is this wonderful Blockhead style 1, 18 watt Baby Bluesbreaker amp. And this one is quite special indeed.
It was built by the now infamous Ossie Ashen of Blockhead (and most recently, Three Monkeys) Amps in the late 1990’s. It was painstakingly reversed engineered from the stockpile of vintage Marshal 18 watt amps that Solidbody Guitars had in their inventory at the time. The Radiospares power and output transformers were meticulously blueprinted and reproduced even to the extent of using old laminations, the aluminum chassis hand bent, the cabinet built with finger jointed birch, and all the components were wired point to point, paying particular attention to the component values and circuit layout—- all just like the originals. Ossie went to such great lengths that the power cord is even knotted on the inside of chassis for the purpose of strain relief —just like Marshal did it in the 60s!
The point here is that Ossie’s attention to detail was 2nd to none, and is a common denominator in all of these Blockhead amps. This particular amp is especially desirable because the cabinet it is modeled after the Marshall block logo style 1. It was the earlier bluesbreaker style and in my opinion the much sharper looking. In fact, while I have seen heads with these style 1 appointments, I have never seen one in a combo format—— so it is quite rare.
At one time there was extensive information on the internet about these amps from Solidbody Guitars, but they are now unfortunately out of business. Another extremely valuable resource was UltraSound Recording Studios In NYC. At one time they sold boutique amps and had a fabulous web page which has since disappeared, I suppose because Blockheads are no longer made. There is however an excellent YouTube video by a guy named skydog46, which is definitely worth a watch and listen.
