Overview
The Bock Audio 195 (formerly the Soundelux U195) is a large diaphragm condenser microphone with fixed cardioid polar pattern. The 195 employs transformer-coupled FET electronics and was designed as a general purpose utility microphone, though it quickly became a favorite for many engineers as a bass drum mic -- something of a replacement for the vintage (and expensive) Neumann U 47 fet model.
The rear of the 195 features a switchable pad, low cut, and "FAT / NORM" switch. The low cut attenuates the microphone's low frequency response by 10dB at 20Hz, while the FAT switch is a broad range boost from 20 - 400Hz. Using the fat and low cut switches together creates a pre-tailored EQ curve which suits itself well to bass drum recording.
