• This is a Luthier's dream! Plays perfectly, just needs a restringing, and maybe a slight neck adjustment, abit of cosmetic work needed, some  TLC!  We think this is a possible prototype (thus our asking price) - there is no exact Hofner 463 archtop like this globally, anywhere, that we could find online over the past 2.5 years. Not much information on 1958 Hofner 463 Archtop as so few made, must be max of 4 to 5 made in the particular year of 1958.  There were two similar, but the other one apparently stolen (which belonged to David Brass) and another to a gentleman in Belgium with a 52/53 model. This makes this a super rare vintage Hofner! The one up for sale here needs restoration, we were not prepared to touch it, in fear of de-valuing it, as it seems there was only one made in the world (which thus makes it a possible prototype)

  • The differences of this 463 archtop ,in comparison to other few 463 archtops (particularly those mad e in the 1950's) is the following:

  • 1) There is no brand guitar name "Hofner" etched into Lyre tailpiece
    2) There is no "Hofner" wording on the Body
    3) This 463 has a pickup bracket (unusual, who added this?)*
    4) Ivory inlay on Bridge* (could have been added later)

  • So...no "Hofner" name anywhere on the body is exactly lke the 1952/53 463 archtop, and in fact, looks exactly identical, but with the 1954 463 archtop Headstock and purfling.

  • Is it one of a kind - perhaps a Hofner prototype between the 463 archtop and 463 electric?

  • Or

  • Is it a prototype between the 52/53 and 54 models, as the Lyre tailpiece has no "Hofner" name etched into it (as per David Brass's 463)?

  • Date:
We looked inside the body with dental mirror and light...now here comes a mystery - the pencil date was very faint and we could only really see the last 2 digits which looked like '58. Now how could this particular archtop be manufactured in1958? There were only a handful made in 1954 so why stock pile the parts for 1 x 463 archtop for 6-7 years? Even then, I still can't find another 463 non cut out archtop like this.

  • So either it is a prototype or the only 1958 463 Archtop ever, and either way its valuable.

  • It needs work but being a highly valued collectible we are leaving it untouched as not to risk devaluing it.
  • We have spent over 2.5 year searching and been in touch with Hofner specialists, it seems this is priceless! <3
