Castanha Antique Portuguese 12-String Mandolin 1800s

Stunning and rare Portuguese made 12 string mandolin style instrument. Custom, high end marquetry through out including a gorgeous rosette and what may be pieces of jade in the outer binding. The headstock and tuners on this amazing instrument are absolutely incredible. Comes with a wooden coffin style hard case which is a piece of art in itself. Label inside has inscription in Portuguese which translates to: “Makes and adjusts, in his establishment, on the main street of Ribeira Grande, violas (Protuguese folkloric guitars), violoes (Spanish guitars), cavaquinhos (which are steel string ukeleles), guitarras (Portuguese guitars) and raabecas (folk violins) for modest prices”

Body: Spruce top with ivory bridge, back and side wood is unknown (11 3/4” lower bout width)

Neck: Unknown neck woods with a U-shaped profile, 17 3/8” scale length, 1 9/16” wide nut, and a stunning hand carved rooster head at the headstock

Pickups/Hardware: All original with brass linear movement tuners and an ivory bridge

Cosmetic Condition: The original French polish is in very good condition with some minor dings and dents but no serious damage. The neck has a few small divots but is clean and smooth for the most part. The hand carved headstock has held up wonderfully with a few small blemishes but no cracks or repairs to be found. This is a truly unique vintage mandolin!

Playability: The strings are nice and low, play great, and ring out clearly across the board. This mandolin plays surprisingly well for its age!
