About This Listing

The Custom was first introduced in 1953 as an upgraded version of the Les Paul Model, which is what the Goldtop Standard was known as before 1958. The first version of the Custom had a black finish, which Les Paul himself requested because he wanted an elegant guitar that “looked like a tuxedo.” Other upgrades included an ebony fretboard with square pearl inlays; fancy binding on the top, back, neck and headstock; and gold plated hardware. The early version also had a P-90 pickup in the bridge position and the new Alnico V pickup with rectangular pole pieces in the neck position. And unlike the Les Paul Model, the Custom didn’t have a maple top with a mahogany back but was instead made from solid mahogany.

In 1957 Gibson changed the Custom, dropping the two single coil pickups in favor of the newly introduced humbuckers. Almost all of these Les Paul Customs were made with three pickups, although a very tiny number were made with two pickups. This here is one of those two pickup Alnico/P90 versions.

Features:
  • The neck is a palm pleasing full 50's neck, as opposed to the 1960 slim neck.
  • The fretboard and frets are in stellar original condition.
  • Original finish with minor buckle rash, minor play wear, light checking throughout.
  • Replaced Tone capacitors
  • Original Alnico Square Pole Piece neck pickup
  • Original P90 bridge pickup
  • Original Gold Hardware except for a replaced chrome Gibson bridge with original gold saddles.
  • Orignal Gold Waffle back tuners with perfect condition single ring knobs
  • One screw missing from control cavity cover
  • Serial #: 7 2178
  • Weight: 9.8lbs
  • Original black hardshell case with all functioning components, original golden yellow lining, minor scuffs and marks.
  • Finish is ALL original (see black light photos)

This is IDENTICAL to the 1957 Les Paul Custom Keith Richards used in the early 70's. In fact, his serial number was 7 3138. Hendrix is documented having  played one, Chuck Berry, and of course the man himself... Les Paul. This guitar proves the point that you don't have to have PAFs in a 50's Les Paul to reach guitar nirvana.

Product Overview
The Gibson Les Paul may carry the distinction of having the most special editions, variations, and custom models of any single guitar model. The first of these many redesigns came just one year after the original Les Paul in the form of the Les Paul Custom. The Custom differed from the normal Les Paul in a few key ways. Cosmetically, it featured all black appointments and finish, gold-plated hardware, and a generous helping of white binding on the pickguard, fingerboard, and body. The Custom also included super low frets (hence the nickname, the Fretless Wonder), an inlayed deco decal on the headstock, and a Mahogany top where the standard used maple.
