Alex Van Halen's 1977 Ludwig 14 x6.5 Super-Sensitive Snare Drum Etc.
This drum was used on Van Halen's first album and tour in 1978. This drum was the backbone of Van Halen's bone crushing sound. The head is covered with duct tape in a "triangle W" pattern. This tape was a key part of Van Halen's signature snare drum sound. The drum shows considerable signs of wear but is still in excellent playing condition. The photos depict the condition of the collection accurately.
How much the drum was used after the bands 1978 tour is unclear, however Van Halen can be seen playing an identical drum as late as 1984 (see video). In 1996 Alex Van Halen signed the head and gave the drum to his friend Todd Trent, the Ludwig artist relations manager at the time. At the same time he gave Trent the Simmons pad and brain that had been used on several Van Halen tours and recordings. The personalized Regal 3-S drum sticks were acquired separately. These items are being sold as a package and not available separately. All of these items were recently featured in DRUM! Magazine.
The head of the snare is signed by Alex Van Halen. The COAs for both the snare and Simmons gear are signed by Todd Trent and the seller.
