Check out the demo video below to see how this thing can still rock!

First the good stuff. The pickups, wiring harness, pots, pickguard, tuners, and other miscellaneous parts are original. The knobs are not original to this guitar, but are vintage era correct Gibson knobs from circa 1964. The only exception is the tailpiece which looks to be a more recent replacement.

The guitar sounds and plays exceptionally well. It sports the wider 1 and 11/16 inch nut width on the neck. It has a nice medium-C neck profile, much better than the pencil thin necks you see on 1960-1961 guitars. As a stop tailpiece guitar, this configuration maximizes the sonic capabilities of the instrument. Most tremolo-equip models sacrifice some measure of tone for the sake of the possibility of vibrato.

The Brazilian Rosewood fretboard is in fantastic condition, and evidence is the lovely deep grain and dark tone characteristic of this desirable wood. The frets look to be original and are in great shape. There is some finish checking in places, including near the strap button. But everything on the neck is stable and there are no cracks on the heel.

Now the unfortunate part. First of all this guitar had a headstock repair long ago. It was well done and is stable, but a little bit more touch up with white paint would make it look better. It looks like the heel probably had some kind of repair at some point.  The neck joint is smooth, which is characteristic of early SG neck joints, but not by 63.  Further, it has been touched up and oversprayed with white finish. This has been removed in some places. You can see the original finish in several places where the overspray has been partially removed. It’s still looks very nice but there’s obviously overspray on portions of the instrument. The original finish still visible in places on the guitar, especially the cavities. You could probably remove overspray with some “sweat equity“ but it’s probably best to just leave it as is.

Serial number looks to be 122512. I can read one pot code easily without removing the harness. Looks to date to 1963. I’m 100% certain the harness is totally original.  The switch is a little stiff but still works.
