About This Listing

LED Display Upgrade suitable for any XP-80.
White on Blue and White on Black (Negative)

This NEW Negative Blue / Black LED display has a number of unique design features.

1. Custom Japanese FFSTN (negative) Tri-Axis LCD panel for improved side to side (lateral) and 6o'clock desktop view.

This custom graphic display looks great mounted in the XP-80. For the XP keyboard, i recommend using the blue display. Colour preference is down to personal preference. Both types are ready to ship.

2. Optimised display contrast to match various Roland modules.

In order to make the extensive tooling costs worthwhile, it was necessary to design this graphic display to work in other Roland modules which are slightly different in regards to contrast. An average voltage was calculated, the display was then designed to that spec. As a result, the XP can be optimised around menu settings 3-7. This is part of the design and necessary to ensure the display is compatible in other Rolands.

3. Oversized LED backlight.

Largest possible backlight footprint, keeping LED's away from the viewing area to avoid unwanted lightspot. The result is a flat, even background / border with minimal imperfections. With this negative display, the backlight design was very important. If the border was patchy and uneven due to LED lightspot, it would ruin the look of the display.

4. Custom 5000K Pure White LED's.

The LED's used on this display are pure white 5000 Kelvin types. They were specifically requested. I wanted pure white light to maximise the display contrast. Combined with the backlight design, custom bezel dimensions and the highest quality 'FF' double film compensation / polarizers. The final result is a display that looks nearly like an OLED, nearly ! Its as close as it's possible to get with a Negative Black LCD.
Its very difficult to get the black display 'right'
A significant number of revisions were required during design to achieve this aim.
Marginal gains philosophy was applied to everything, the collective result is, indisputably, the best looking Negative Black LCD available.

5. Fully adjustable backlight dimmer.

This feature is absolutely necessary with the black display. Before it ships, the brightness will be set to the level 'i' think is correct for the black FFSTN glass. You can, ofcourse, adjust it further to either brighten (anticlockwise) or dim (clockwise) trick is, not to boost it too much. When its clearly readable @ arms length, it's bright enough. There is a point, a sweetspot, where the graphics are not too bright and not too dim, the background is as black as possible and it looks amazing.
Armed with the backlight dimmer. Its possible to dial in this sweetspot perfectly. It simply needs fine tuning. The dimmer is attached to the display via a long ribbon cable, adjustment is possible with a small screwdriver. The display should be screwed in, connected up, then XP fully reassembled, perspex viewing window transfered. Finally, from the normal desktop viewing position, XP switched on and backlight brightness set up using the attached dimmer. The blue display is built to the exact same backlight dimmer specification as the black display.
Once the backlight brightness is set up, the dimmer should be tucked inside, it's set and forget !
The display contrast is then controlled from the XP menu in the normal way.

These special negative displays were designed in parallel with my NEW black Akai display. Both share very similar design characteristics. I used the same tricks on both to maximise the performance. Both have the same Tri-Axis glass produced in Japan, designed to maximise the viewing angles.
A lot of time and effort has went into designing and manufacturing these special displays. The pursuit of perfection, means the display is built by 2 different companies. One to produce the special Tri-Axis glass. The other, the chip on board and final assembly. The selling price is a reflection of that whole process and ultimately what you'll recieve in the post, the best looking, best performing, highest quality display for your XP.
The display will arrive, ready to Plug N Play.
NO soldering or modifications are required.
Simply, connect the ribbon as before, bolt it in, then switch on and adjust the backlight dimmer.

**Some customers prefer the displays very bright, if that's your preference, you should choose the White on Blue. The background is a beautiful blue at every brightness setting**

***This display is specifically configured to upgrade your XP-80. The viewing angle is set during manufacture @ 6o'clock view. Correct for a desktop instrument. Its important to fit the correct type, otherwise the look and functionality of the display will be badly compromised***

**this listing is for one (1) Plug N Play display only**

**If you buy a display, contact me for instructions when your ready to Install**

Under NO circumstances should this display be dismantled or disturbed in any way. There are NO user serviceable parts. The display is Plug N Play!
