About This Listing

Beautiful Vintage 1930s Weymann Acoustic Archtop Guitar w/ Vintage Case in Excellent Restored Condition, made by Harmony in Chicago, USA!

Stunning Vintage 1930s Weymann Acoustic Archtop Guitar with Vintage Chipboard Case in Excellent Restored Condition, made by Harmony in Chicago, USA. Harmony made some very nice professional grade instruments before the war and some of these mid 30’s instruments are just wonderful. The Weymann brand is usually associated with their fancy banjos and mandolins, but they contracted the good folks at Harmony for this archtop model, which is very similar to the Cremona IV model and features a solid carved spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides, on-par with the Armstrong, Fischer and higher end Biltmore models from the era. It has a 25” scale length, 1-3/4” nut width and a 15-1/2” lower bout. It has a numerical stamp inside the body that reads 3177#, which is most likely a model or serial number, as I don’t think this is as early as 1931. The tone is just fabulous and she's beautiful with tons of character and a deep tobacco sunburst finish. It’s got a gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard with the original bakelite pickguard and hardware. Mid 30s Harmony Cobra Headstock shape as seen on the Royal Crest model, headstock overlay is intact with the colors bright and vibrant. It’s got the number “26” stamped on the tip of the headstock, probably a production number. It has an incredible amount of built-in reverb and plenty of volume. The carved spruce top with mahogany body really projects and gives it a brilliant tone with warm, smooth mids and a tight, defined bass and sizzling highs with great string definition and clarity. The wood has aged very nicely, providing a sound you can only get from a very well built 80 year old guitar. It’s got a medium large deep soft V neck profile that feels amazing in my large hands. It has had a neck reset for optimum action, set up with new D’Addario 11-52 80/20 bronze strings and action set at 5/32” to 3/32” @ 12th fret with room to adjust the bridge in either direction. The frets show zero wear after some re-gluing, leveling and recrowning, and play true up and down the fretboard, which was detailed and conditioned. There are many minor dings and scratches and plenty of finish imperfections, especially on the lower sides and back, where there is some finish flaking. Some the seams were reglued on the lower area of the top and the back, which aren’t perfectly flush and are stable. The center seam is visible and slightly raised on the back with a slight center seam separation beginning on the top beneath the tailpiece, which is stable and not in need of repair. Surprisingly, there are no cracks or crack repairs and the original violin finish is in remarkable condition. It’s still sporting it’s original pickguard and mounting hardware and was fitted with a set of vintage Waverly tuners w/ black buttons from a 40s or 50s Stella that look great and are working fine, with no additional holes drilling headstock. The tone bar braces are tight and the guitar is in excellent structural condition. The end-pin is probably not original and the bridge appears to be original with some chips on either end. The headstock overlay is bright and vibrant and all of the binding is intact, original bone nut still hanging in there. It’s been lovingly restored and is ready to tune up and play at home, stage and/or studio. Offered with a decent 50s/60s chipboard case with blue interior that has a lot of wear and is missing the storage compartment and has probably been with this guitar for many years. Packed and shipped with experience you can trust, this will be insured for full value with signature required for delivery.
