This is a 1970 - 1971 'Tacoma' Branded Electric Bass, also known as Model 57H01490L marketed by Silvertone; this one has a very blurred out "SAKAI" logo on the headstock.
Made in Japan.
This bass sounds so good that The War on Drugs recorded the song "Under The Pressure" with this model! (Go check @nightlands on instagram, their bass player).
This Tacoma brand electric bass was most commonly known as the Silvertone 1490, which was only offered during a short, 5-year run between 1968 & 1972.
I'm uncertain who owned and/or distributed the 'Tacoma' name but I'm certain it's a bona-fide piece of Teisco history!
The 1490 bass was a solid monster of a Fender-type clone, brought to us from our friends at Teisco as part of the late-60s Japanese 'invasion'.
The 1490 features a beefy look, giant pickups and a cool, two-part pickguard (this one is missing the small one).
Under the 'Silvertone' name, this bass was introduced in the Sears Fall/Winter 1968 catalog as the 57H01490L, and retired in Spring/Summer 1972.
The original model featured the two knob/two rocker switch design. Between 1970 & 1971, Teisco changed it to a 3-way toggle and 3 knobs (vol, vol, tone), which is reflected in the bass offered in this listing.
This bass has a lot of dings and checks in the finish, missing 4 little screws where the bridge pickup goes & some screws are not the original ones, the plastic cover of the toggle switch has a crack but evidently doesn't affect it's functionality and there are two small cracks on the pickguard. Plays awesome with fingers, has some fret buzz when played more aggressively or with a pick, might need fret leveling. Otherwise, sounds totally awesome!
