I have examined the attached photos of the instrument described below, but have not seen the instrument itself. Below is my estimate, based on these photos, of the instrument’s value; however, it is not possible to judge from photos alone the exact state of originality and need of repair, so my appraisal is only accurate insofar as the photos are representative of the actual condition of the instrument.
We certify the guitar described below is, in our opinion, a Gibson SG Special model made in the year 1962.
Description: We have been provided the following description: “This is a Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar Serial Number 58654 Imprinted on back of headstock dated to Kalamazoo plant 1962. Pots # 13462 02 date to 1962 mepco/centra Lab Inc. The frets are in nice shape. The tailpiece/bridge number is TPBR 8513 12809. The neck is straight. Knobs missing. Machine Heads are original. Pickups are P 90's. Right side on neck (facing the guitar) binding is missing from the 16th to 22nd fret. Wiring is original Lots of dings, scratches. We think it grades in the 70% range. All pickups and volume and tone pots work, as well as the input jack.” Upon inspection of the photos we note this guitar has very considerable playing wear. The pickguard has been removed and is not shown in the photos, but for the purposes of this appraisal we shall assume that the owner has the original guard which was removed only for the purpose of showing the pickup cavities. We note that there is added wood in the neck pickup cavity, probably added to reinforce the neck joint. We note that there appears to be a slipped joint or crack in the body in this area. We also note that there are two cracks in the body by the input jack and that there is an added washer to reinforce the jack. There is missing binding on the treble side of the fingerboard. The D and G string tuner posts are bent. The two volume knobs are missing. The switch tip is a replacement. In other respects it conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made with mahogany neck and body, typical SG body shape, two black plastic coil covered single coil soap bar P-90 pickups, three on a strip nickel plated Kluson Deluxe tuners with white oval plastic buttons, and cherry red finish.
Current market value in its present condition: $2,000 (two thousand dollars)
