This small, double-string guitar is a traditional Portuguese instrument called Viola de Braga or Viola Braguesa. Existing since the XVII century, it has 10 paired strings, straight fretboard and decorated top. My particular instrument was built in 1998 by a well known Portuguese luthier, Alfredo Matos Machado and purchased in Lisbon in 2004. The scale is 50 cm and the best tuning for a traditional guitar player would be g, d, Bb, F, C (like a guitar on 3rd fret without the 6th string). But it also lends itself to open tunings.

I have been using this lovely instrument in the same way I would use a small 12-string guitar, except that the viola is much better suited for solo playing. Its usefulness in recording can be appreciated by listening to my composition ‘Birthday Song' (link below).
