Fantastic 1947 Martin D28 Herringbone Acoustic Guitar Vintage

1947 Martin D28 Herringbone

This is a 1947 Martin D28 Herringbone acoustic guitar. It is serial # 98880. This is a very special D28. We contacted Martin about this guitar. It was made on Feb 14th,1947.  It was order #978.   According Martin and our own research, the last D28 Herringbone is said to have been made earlier in 1947 and was serial # 98223. Since Martin serial numbers run in strict numerical order, this D28 Herringbone is a special puzzle indeed. For all practical intents and purposes, this could be the actual last D28 Herringbone ever made.  
We purchased this from a gentleman whose family had sent the guitar to Martin at some point long ago to be refinished. There is a worn spot to the lacquer on the back of the neck (see photos). Other than that, the guitar looks fantastic. The pick guard and the decal were renewed when this was refinished. This has an over-sized rose wood bridge plate and non scalloped braces. The tuners were replaced at some point, but the original ones were kept and they come with the guitar. One of the ferrells is missing from the original set of tuners.(see photos). The case is a 1980s era Martin case.

As for play-ability and sound, this is truly the level of instrument that makes you wonder if you ever held or heard a fine acoustic guitar ever before. It is that fantastic. It truly plays and sounds like a dream.
