The Airline Pocket Bass is one of those odd instruments that may not be on everyone’s radar, but one that definitely has a place in history as an excellent sounding bass for recording. In fact, noted vintage gear collector and former Saturday Night Live bandleader G.E. Smith called these "the best recording basses around". With original vintage examples becoming harder to find, as well as more and more expensive, the time seemed right for a reissue of this classic vintage bass.
The new Pocket Bass Reissue from Airline Guitars is great sounding, fun to play, and addresses some shortcomings of the originals. The 26.5” scale length, which is extremely short, is actually a bit longer than the original vintage examples and makes this bass a joy to play. The bridge features a built-in Piezo acoustic pickup, and as another upgrade, also includes an active preamp for improved tone. In addition to a Master Volume, the Blend control allows you to dial in the perfect balance between Piezo acoustic definition and the fat, thumping bass of the neck humbucker. This will certainly trump the cool old vintage version for tone and playability but preserves the look and vibe of the original.
