Vintage Nashville branded Hohner Tele bass 1970s
This is a Hohner, but as with many ‘60s-‘70s Japanese guitars they were sold under various brand names.
This has a Tele GUITAR shaped body, not an actual Tele BASS shaped body. It’s essentially a bass version of the lower end incarnation of the so-called Hohner “Prince” model.
"Made In Japan" still legible on a sticker on the neck plate.
Ca. 1970s. Very good condition. There are noticeable, deep finish checking/cracks on the top and back, which is quite common on Japanese instruments of the period with poly finishes. Some minor scratches and a few small surface dings, about an 7 on a scale of 10...quite clean for a guitar that's about forty years old!
Medium rounded neck profile, slightly chunky but not at all clunky. 21 frets plus a "zero fret". Nominal 30" scale length (14 13/16” from the zero fret to the 12th fret, so technically it’s a 29 7/8” scale). Neck is 1 5/8" wide at the nut.
The body's made of laminated wood (i.e. plywood) and thinner than a real Tele, 1 1/4" thick. Has a tummy contour too. Maple (or similar) neck with bound veneer rosewood fingerboard.
Unusual six bolt neck mounting.
There’s a small repaired crack on the upper side of the pickguard near the neck, you probably wouldn’t even notice it if I didn’t point it out…it’s not a big deal. There’s also what looks like a melt mark on the plastic control plate at the jack. It’s not a crack (although one of the adjacent screw holes has a small crack) it’s a mystery to me how that got there, but again, it’s no big deal. One of the bridge saddles is not original although it’s virtually identical to the original saddles…it has Allen socket screws instead of the slotted height screws on the original saddles.
Weighs 7.04 pounds, according to my digital scale.
Has just been serviced; expertly set up, low action without extraneous fret buzz, straight neck, low action, BRAND NEW La Bella Hard Rockin’ Steel short scale bass strings (.045-.065-.080-.100). Plays and sounds great!
This is an uncommon and unusual, great sounding bass with tons of visual appeal. Of course, don't expect Gibson or Fender-like quality, these 1960s-‘70s Japanese bizarre guitars are what they are...cheapo, yet playable and functional guitars with tons of vintage appeal!
No case. Will be double-boxed for safe shipping.
