Vintage: EUR - Distortion - Whau Whau (Wah - Fuzz)
Late Sixites, early seventies Wah-Fuzz pedal, made in Italy.
The Distortion Whau Whau has, apart from the distortion/fuzz section a siliar circuit than the legendary original Vox / Jen-Wah (Super Cry Baby), but with some, slight but audible differences.
It was sold at it's time largely identically built under different brand names, both in the plastic housing, as here, as well as in some versions in metal housing, in this version switch and pot's have been placed aside.
The best-known brand names were, as far as I found out, Meazzi, Cosmosound, Silversound, Goldsound, EUR, M3 emthree, G.I.S., Zenta, Farfisa, Gun, Wersi, Mac, even a Vox Distortion Whau Whau has been around for a while.
The housing is an apparently quite stable plastic construction, which, as it has survived the last 45 years, should still last for a while. Inside, it is partially metal-reinforced, just as the interior is built quite robust.
The device is, as far as I can estimate, still in unobstructed original condition, the pot still works fine without scratching.
Circuitry and sound are, apart from the additional distortion, or actually fuzz unit, similar to the Jen-wah, which means a rather short sweep-range, a less intense frequency change, compared to more modern wah's, which on the other hand neither sounds too dull nor too sharp, but has an incredibly musical vocal quality, which sounds quite different than most modern wah pedals.
Good Cream, Hendrix to Shaft Sound.
In direct comparison, the EUR sounds a little warmer, rounder than a Jen-Wah, which is probably due to the different inductor-coil (no Fasel, but excellent sounding) in combination with a germanium transistor - instead of a silicone one in the Jen - for the wah circuit, whereas the fuzz part works with four sSilicone transistors. Arco Arcotronics capacitors. The Jen sounds a bit slimmer, maybe thinner, with a bit sharper heights, the EUR a bit warmer, softer. Variantions on a theme, nevertheless the same family, I would say.
Another difference is that the old Vox / Jen Wahs always swallow some signal when activated, which means that the Wah reduces the signal volume. With the EUR the signal stays pretty much the same, or even gets slightly louder, which is usually a bit more practical.
In my view, a very excellent vintage wah sound.
The wah can be switched from pure wah to wah-fuzz on the front, the controls for the fuzz are located on the bottom, distortion and volume.
Soundwise the pedal produces a typical vintage transistor fuzz sound, which can be a bit too much with the distortion control totally turned, also resulting in some additional noise, but with more subtle settings the wah-fuzz combination can also sound quite good, depending on the musical context. What you van get is ome nice fuzz crunch in the bass and mid range, whereas the treble will sounds a bit sharper, more snappy.
The device is in good working order for the age, function has been checked, runs flawlessly. Due to the construction some mechanical noise is acoustically audible when "whaing", but this does not affect the signal in any way.
Operation only with 9V battery, the battery compartment is accessible from the outside, sliding cover on the bottom plate.
