The Hohner Erica is an entry-level instrument. It's fine for learning on, and then when you get competent you'll probably want to explore the wide world of snazzy Italian boxes, but this one will get you there for significantly less money. Many people modify Ericas (and their even more entry-level cousins Pokerworks) by putting a strip of felt under the buttons on the right-hand side so they don't travel as far and you can play faster, but that hasn't been done on this instrument. It's a completely standard Erica, just like they come from the Hohner factory.

If you're not familiar with button accordions (also called melodeons), they're closely related to harmonicas, in that each button produces two different notes depending on whether you're pushing or pulling on the bellows. Each row is diatonic in one key, just like a harmonica, meaning that it has only the notes of a major scale in that key. (Plus a couple of accidentals, NOT like a harmonica.) This one is in G on the outer row and C on the inner row, which is the most common setup for French folk music. If you want to play English folk music, you probably want a D/G. (If you want to play Irish music, you probably want a B/C, which is a TOTALLY different system.) The eight buttons on the left are four bass/chord pairs; there are only six chords, because you get F and G chords in both directions. It really all does make sense eventually. There are plenty of good books for learning to play these.

The instrument is in excellent condition: no scratches or dings, no broken or iffy reeds, reasonably new straps. It's tuned fairly wet, meaning that there are two reeds per note that aren't quite in unison with each other, but that's not a defect, that's just how these instruments are supposed to sound.
