Custom Built Conn 56J Prototype CC Tuba — Nickel/Silver, 5 Valves — Local Only (Austin, TX)

This is a custom-built Matt Walters prototype CC tuba, created during the development of the Conn 56J. Unlike the production 56J, this horn reflects Walters’ original, uncompromised design intent resulting in a more responsive, stable, and resonant instrument across all registers.

I purchased this horn in 2022 from a reputable collector & performer in the Austin area, and it has been one of my favorite horns to play. I’m selling it so it can go to someone who will actively enjoy it, as I retired from playing in 2026.

Build & Features

• 4/4 CC tuba with a 5/4 feel
• Nickel and polished silver finish
• Five valves: four short‑action pistons + one vented fifth‑valve rotor
• 19" bell
• Smooth, fast slide action
• Unique prototype construction details not found on the production 56J

Playing Characteristics

This horn plays exceptionally well; better than the manufactured version it inspired. It has a round, resonant sound with excellent projection and reliable intonation. Response is quick and even across registers, making it suitable for large wind ensembles, brass bands, or chamber settings like quintet work.
