The Akai Professional MPC Live III Retro is a standalone music production workstation designed for beatmaking, sampling, sequencing, recording, arranging, and live performance. It is essentially the latest MPC Live III technology packaged in a vintage-inspired Akai design that pays homage to the classic MPC machines of the late 1980s.
Key features
- 16 MPCe pads with velocity, pressure, and 3D-sensing technology for expressive drum and instrument playing.
- 7-inch multi-touch color display for editing, mixing, sampling, and arranging.
- 8-core processor and 8GB RAM, giving it substantially more processing power than the previous MPC Live II.
- 128GB internal storage, expandable with an SD card or 2.5-inch SATA drive.
- MPC3 operating system, with features such as clip launching, Pro Stems separation, advanced time-stretching, and expanded sequencing.
- 16 stereo audio tracks and up to 32 plug-in tracks.
- Built-in stereo speakers and a condenser microphone, allowing you to create and sample without additional equipment.
- Rechargeable battery, with approximately 3–4 hours of operation depending on usage.
- Touch Strip for controlling effects, modulation, pitch and other parameters.
- 16-step sequencer buttons for hands-on beat programming.
- Four Q-Link knobs plus numerous dedicated function buttons.
Connections
The MPC Live III Retro has an unusually comprehensive set of connections:
- 2 × XLR/TRS combo microphone/line inputs
- 6 × balanced 1/4-inch outputs
- Stereo RCA/phono inputs
- 2 × 5-pin MIDI inputs and 2 × MIDI outputs
- 8 CV/Gate outputs for modular synthesizers and compatible hardware
- 2 × USB-A
- 1 × USB-C
- SD card slot
- 2.5-inch SATA drive bay
- Headphone output
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
What makes the Retro version different?
The important thing is that the Retro is primarily a styling/design edition. It has the same core MPC Live III production capabilities, but uses a classic Akai color scheme and visual design inspired by the original MPC machines. It was announced in May 2026 at $1,699 USD.
In practical terms, it's like having a portable recording studio, sampler, drum machine, synthesizer workstation, sequencer, mixer, and performance controller in one unit—and you don't need a computer to make music with it.
