In 1981, the Flying V received its second major update of the Norlin era, ironically dubbed the Flying V I. The redesign moving the position of the knobs into an offset line, and removing the pickguard entirely. While a number of different versions of the V would be produced throughout the '80s, the Flying V I would remain the base model until it was replaced in 1990 by the Flying V '67, which returned to the more traditional designs of the late '60s and '70s.
