This Gibson Les Paul Classic 1960 comes from the first series of Les Paul Classics, that was introduced in 1990 and was discontinued in 2006. It differs from the Les Paul Classics that are made nowadays.
The Les Paul Classic was introduced as a vintage-oriented alternative to the Les Paul Standard, and even was more expensive at introduction than the Standard. The key feature of the Les Paul Classic was its slim neck profile. It also had some other features true to the 1960 original: a narrow headstock, thin cutaway binding, aged yellowish fingerboard inlays, inked-on serial number, nickel hardware, vintage-style logo and aged binding on body and neck. Some differences were the Les Paul Classic's truss rod cover with "Classic" and the pickguard engraved "1960." The pickups came with no covers, so the coils were exposed.
Owners of these guitars often changed some features to make them look more like the vintage originals: the trussrod covers and pickguard were often changed to blank versions. The pickups were often changed to closed pickups (with covers) or nickel covers were added to the original pickups.
This also happened to the guitar that is for sale here: the pickups were replaced by custom handwound vintage spec humbuckers. If you want we can replace them with open coil humbuckers like the originals, or put in a set of Burstbuckers - please contact us if you want us to do so.
The pickguard appears to be blank at first glance. But when looking closely, you can still identify the “1960” on the pickguard (see picture) and also a faded word "Classic" is still visible on the trussrod cover.
To differentiate the Classics more from other Les Paul models, Gibson decided in 1994 to change the headstock logo from Les Paul MODEL tot Les Paul CLASSIC, as is the case on this guitar, which identifies this guitar as one from 1994 or later.
It is a beautiful, naturally aged instrument, without any real damage. It is a great player, with a 1960 slim neck, and a very balanced classic Les Paul sound. The original case is included with the sale.
Needless to say, the guitar for sale is the exact instrument that is on the pictures. Please let us know if you have any questions about it or need additional photos of specific details on the guitar. We'll be happy to help. Please note that our products are priced in euros.
