Up for sale, a 1970s Fernandes SG 12 string in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This vintage "lawsuit" era solidbody was produced in Japan in the late 1960s, during the era where the Japanese were producing instruments clearly inspired by their USA-made counterparts. While Gibson didn't produce a 12 string SG in their vintage line, this guitar clearly takes cues from Gibson's instruments of the 1970s (and also the Burny line of guitars, also produced by the Fernandes company and the guitars most commonly associated with their Gibson-esque output).
The tone is decidedly different than most of the 12 string guitars that originated in the 1960s during the British Invasion and Folk boom in the USA, and this Fernandes has a deeper, richer tone with more low end content and sustain. Sure, there's plenty of chime and top end to be had as well, but the combination of a solid mahogany body and pair of humbuckers produces a tone that's pure SG goodness. The weight is a mere 7lbs 12oz too! Professionally setup and freshly strung with D'addario 10-47 strings, this Fernandes is a rare and well preserved model with low action and solid intonation.
The neck has a medium C profile, and the depth of the profile stays very consistent as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard. The nut width is a slender 1 9/16", yet the strings are extremely well spaced and the guitar feels very manageable for chording and single note lines without being too cramped. The original frets are fairly wide, with well rounded crowns and only very faint wear in the first position, with almost no fretwear up the neck. The double line Kluson-style nickel tuning machines on the headstock turn smoothly and hold pitch well. It's a testament to the quality of these vintage Japanese guitars that even the smallest detail isn't overlooked. In this case, where you'd typically see "Kluson Deluxe" stamped into the covers on the tuning gears, these have "Fernandes" typed in font so small you have to strain to see it.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the chrome pickup covers, Nashville style bridge, and string anchor plate have very clean plating. The hardware is completely original with the exception of a set of modern black Gibson speed knobs. Both humbuckers are original, and the wiring harness is untouched, with original pots and tone caps. The deep cherry finish is in great shape, with the only mark of particular note being an added strap button hole on the back of the bass side horn on the body. There is very light finish wear on the back of the neck, some small and faint scratches on the back of the body and light marks in the pick path from honest use, but no serious or structural wear of any kind!
This is a rarely seen, lovingly played and well cared for vintage Fernandes, produced in Japan by the same parent company responsible for the famed Burny instruments!
