Here’s a used Tascam DA30 MkII. These were highly regarded back in the day, and when the MkII was released it cost a decent amount (over £1,000 in 1994...).
They were used to record the final stereo mix on DAT tapes. (DAT tapes were then sent off to make CDs)
Of course hard drives eventually replaced DAT, so this Tascam today is used for copying old DAT archives into computers.
With this unit, you can plug the analogue outputs (using XLR or RCA cables) into the line inputs on your interface, and then connect the interface to the computer, and then play the tape, and proceed to record into your DAW on the computer.
So with this, you can get the content of your DAT tapes into my computer and saved before they are lost forever as the DAT degrades over time.
In great working condition. I tested it for playback, for a whole hour, and it played beautifully. I then plugged an XLR cable in, into my interface, and then recorded onto Reaper, and the recording was great.
I haven’t tested the unit for recording onto new/blank tapes (because I assume people aren’t recording onto new DAT tapes…they’re not even manufactured anymore!).
