This week's Find of the Week is a somewhat supernatural instrument. It's a PRS prototype of their Silver Sky John Mayer Signature model, formerly owned by the manufacturer's most loyal proponent: Carlos Santana.
Paul Reed Smith teamed up with John Mayer to manufacture a modern spin on a vintage single-coil guitar, pulling inspiration from the neck shape and radius of classic early '60s instruments pioneered by Fender. Equipped with a trem arm, Gen III knife-edge screws, and an inverted headstock for consistency in tuning and string length, they shockingly outsold all USA-made Fender Stratocaster models on Reverb in 2021.
When the Silver Sky models were in the research and development stage, the PRS team made hundreds of try-out guitars. This particular prototype is referred to as the 'MAGIC' guitar because it was used to clone all the others. Their artist relations team then sent the guitar to Santana for personal evaluation. Long story short, as the seller puts it, this instrument is "actually the birth, the mother, and blueprint of all the others that were built."
The prototype comes with a signed verification letter from Paul Reed Smith himself, as well as another from the PRS Director of Sales. For more photos and information, check out the full listing. Give them an offer, make a deal, or else forget about it.
