As the successor to the successful Korg M1, the manufacturer introduced a device called the 01/W in the 90s, which had more memory, better samples and a sophisticated sequencer.

Let's start with the outstanding features: 32-voice polyphony, 6 MByte ROM with 255 multisamples, modulatable effects system, 200 programs and 200 combinations, sequencer with 7000 notes (48,000 in the FD version).

The new buzzword for sound generation on the 01/W is “waveshaping”. This is the modification of one of the 255 ROM waveforms using 60 wave tableaus, which achieve a different emphasis on different frequency components of the sample. Among the 255 samples (multisounds) you will find many natural instruments as well as synthesizer waveforms, in particular a selection of Prophet VS waves. Due to the higher sample readout rate compared to MI, the sound quality here is significantly better.
