To prove that the SM58 is truly one of the most dynamic dynamic mics on the market, we put it through the paces. Can it actually record just about anything? Check out the video above to see how this mainstay handles synths, cellos, Foley sound design, drums, guitars, ouds, and just about the biggest gong one could ever hope to hit.

Getting the Most From the Shure SM58
Shure SM58
The SM58 is nearly impossible to break, thanks to its mechanical, dynamic moving coil design. It can handle high temps, drops, kicks, and can even be used to hammer a nail in a pinch. (Not recommended...unless you have to.)
Shure SM58
The SM58 can handle any instrument, with a frequency response range from 50 Hz to 15,000 Hz. Its strong presence peak, stretching from about 2,000 Hz to 8,000 Hz, helps vocals cut through loud stage mixes and means great articulation in the studio.
Shure SM58 cardioid polar pattern
The mic's cardioid polar pattern makes it excellent for studio and stage use. It concentrates on picking up what's right in front of the grille and rejecting noise and bleed from instruments on its sides and rear.
Shure SM58
Speaking of vocals, the SM58 features an internal pneumatic shock mount that helps minimize handling noise, and its internal pop filter and mesh grille help combat breath sounds, wind, and plosives.
The Star of the Show

The Shure SM58 has been used for decades on stages of all sizes across the globe. It's not because they're the flashiest or most expensive mics on the market. It's because the Shure SM58 can be trusted in any environment. Whether it's a DIY house show thrown in the basement or a sold-out arena filled with thousands of screaming fans, no mic is more reliable for live vocals than the Shure SM58.
