‘82-‘85 Vintage Fender Precision Bass (P Bass) *Made in USA *Orig Hard Case

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This listing is for a vintage ‘82-‘85 Fender Precision bass. The bass was manufactured at the Fender’s Fullerton plant in California, USA. The bass features an Ash body, a skunk stripe maple neck, a Rosewood fretboard, a white pickguard and white pickup covers. The sale includes a Fender molded hardshell case, which I believe is the original case. The case is in very good condition and fits the bass like a glove.

The bass is in excellent condition or better. There are no large or significant dings or scratches. There is a faint and small (1/4") finish crack near the neck pocket, and that is the worst imperfection. Everything works just as it should. It is obvious that this bass wasn’t played much in the past 32+ years. The gloss on the back of the neck looks glossy and new. The frets show little, if any wear. There is no buckle rash on the back of the body or thumb wear near the pickups. If this was a car I’d say it has extremely low mileage.

The official color is Ivory (Fender color #549), but it has aged into a beautiful Honey Dijon color. (According to the book “The Fender Bass” by Klaus Blasquiz, starting in 1983 the Precision bass only came in four (4) colors: Black, Sienna Sunburst, Brown Sunburst, and Ivory. In a couple of pictures I have removed the pickguard to show the Ivory color under the pickguard (which has aged a lot less) as compared with the Honey Dijon color of the body.

It has a Ser # E320366 and based on information from the Fender website and some other websites, it was manufactured between 1982 and 1985. Based on info from guitarrepairbench.com, it is and ‘84 to ‘85 bass, and this information is also consistent with a sale of a P bass with a similar serial number on Talkbass where the seller listed the bass as an ‘84-‘85 bass. Based on the above, it is was manufactured between 1982 and 1985, and most likely between 1984 and 1985.

THE BOTTOM LINE

You’ll be hard pressed to find an ‘82-‘85 Fender USA Precision bass in as good a condition as this one. In fact, I’ve looked and haven’t found one. I don’t believe there are many of these ‘82-‘85 vintage USA P basses floating around in the used marketplace, and even fewer in excellent condition or better.
