Description
The Marantz PM-54D, produced in 1986 in Japan during the "Golden Era" of Japanese HiFi, is a stellar integrated amp. This amp is known for it's linearity, even at low outputs, achieved by low distortion and noise throughout the power range. This amp was in particular designed to accommodate CD input, with a high-SNR direct-coupling FET-based high-level input stage for CD players. This amp has a "CD direct" mode, where the selector, balance, volume, and so on are bypassed, such that the input is directly connected to the flat amplifier. As such, the signal path is shortened, and the sound purity is maintained. This amp has both MM and MC phono inputs. The build quality is excellent, featuring OFC wiring and copper plating for screws. Overall, this is just a fantastic integrated amplifier.

Condition
Update 2023/06/01: I just downgraded the amp condition and lowered the price significantly. This amp is in poor condition. See below.

Cosmetically, it's gorgeous, with only minor signs of age or use throughout, including general wear (please see pictures). Overall it seems to have been taken care of very well over the years.

I tested the amp output from both speakers outs. I tested all the inputs. I tested the functions on the amp front panel. Overall, everything seems to be working. I was able to listen to music with very clear, dynamic, balanced sound (using Technics SB-M20 speakers, 40W, 8 ohms). However, there are times when one channel output is absent or weak, such that the channels sound unbalanced to me. I find that by fiddling with controls and running the amp a bit, I can restore the full sound. This issue is present after I don’t use the amp for a while, but doesn’t happen much if I use it every day. There is also sometimes minor crackling noise when adjusting the balance. The amp sound is superb. It's dynamic and engaging, with an excellent soundfield. It works very nicely for all genres of music.

This amp was designed to be used with Japanese electricity. If you are using this outside of Japan, I highly recommend a power converter. I have Japanese-made high-quality converters and can include one in your shipment. If you are interested, please message me.
