Mint - like new unit purchased new from Vintage King in 2018. Unit has less than 100 hours of use. Not a scratch on it! Ships with factory box, warranty, and everything it would new.
The unit has been modded to Paul Wolf (original designer of vintage API units) standards. The unit sounds more open, vintage, and 3d with this mod. This unit is extremely versatile with the mod and can be used in tracking, mixing, stem mastering, and mastering sessions in all genres of music. The mod cost me 300. I’ve set the price at a fair value in mind of the mods and new cost values online.
The current design sold new for over 3400 after tax features the “new design” which is not consistent with the original. Thus, the newer models are more suited for rock music and have a more dense, flat, and compressed sound. This may seem counter intuitive as it is a compressor. The new units are simply limited in tonal options and in use depending on the genre.
I have used this unit from acoustic to EDM and it sounds amazing. The power supply has been beefed up as well to increase the headroom and make it more suitable for mastering. The best of this unit is it can be used just for tone without compression! API gear is known for its color and this unit is all about color and being a tone shaper!
If you are interested in the API tone and color I also have a matched pair of API 525 500 series compressors for sale. These can be a great way to inject the op amp, transformers, and more into a hybrid setup without breaking the bank. If I could personally pick 1 API unit to own it would be the 2500. I’ve owned the 550a the 550b 525 5500 and 2500. The 2500 is where it’s act, especially post mods!
