The Clavia Nord series is known for its virtual analog synthesis technology, which uses digital signal processors (DSPs) to emulate the sound of traditional analog synthesizers. The Nord Lead, introduced in 1995, was one of the first synthesizers to popularize the term "virtual analog synthesis". The Nord Lead uses DSPs programmed to emulate both Subtractive and analogue FM synthesis (cross-modulation) to reproduce the warmth and richness of a traditional analog sound.
