For sale is a MINT condition Tacoma Papoose! Not a scratch, ding, buckle rash, or crack to be seen. This thing looks, feels, and plays amazing.
I've seen and owned quite a few of these over the years. Most tend to be pretty beat up, but I have never encountered one that is in THIS good condition. Please take a look at the photos and see for yourself (I've also linked a good demo video of a Papoose being played by Kenny Smith on his guitar YouTube channel, but do some searching and you'll find plenty more).
I love these instruments because of how easy they are to just pick up and play. Its size makes it as comfortable to hold as a baritone uke, and I find that people just gravitate to it to pick out a little tune, even if they don't play much. It's just an inviting little guitar that can happily sit on your couch for impromptu noodling, but also can be used in the studio to make layered guitar parts really stand out.
If you know Tacoma instruments well, you already know the deal with this "Mini" guitar: Great for travel, awesome sound, very cool design, and used by many recording artists I've known to layer or "double" a guitar part.
The original gig bag is included (pictured as well), and I've tried to provide pictures that show every part of the instrument. Please feel free to message me if there are specific photos you need.
The Serial Number is B0765150, which dates this guitar to 1998 - the year Fender bought the Tacoma brand.
Solid cedar top over solid mahogany back/sides. Rosewood fingerboard, 1.875" nut and 19.1" scale. Tuners and strap buttons in perfect condition (no strap included though).
The neck is bolted on as you can see in the photos, and it has a working truss rod.
The Papoose is really an instrument in its own category - with a sound similar to a ukulele with great treble, but still with solid bass. You can play around with strings, but I like .11s just fine. Voiced like a guitar, making this a very fun solution for anyone looking to travel with their guitar but not wanting to deal with buying an expensive case for checking, or hoping there is room in the overhead bins.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I am open to serious offers.
Thank you for looking, and I look forward to sending this beauty to a new home!
Also, for anyone who is new to these, I thought I would provide some descriptions that I thought were very accurate so you can get a better idea of what these instruments are all about (and if you do some Googling, you will see they have a sort of cult following - for good reason).
From Fender:
"The Papoose was the first guitar Tacoma ever made. It is a voiced instrument, 5 frets shorter than a standard guitar with an offset paisley sound hole and a smaller body. It is tuned A-D-G-C-E-A and essentially acts as a normal guitar with a capo on the 5th fret. The advantage of the papoose is its versatility. It has a full, bright sound without the compromises of string scale of a capoed guitar. It adds a wonderful treble quality in the studio for balancing out layered recordings, and works well as a travel instrument."
From fretshop.com:
"Tacoma guitars was originally a manufacturer based in Tacoma, Washington. The business closed down in 2008, making this little guitar a rare find indeed. The P1 Papoose—designed by Terry Atkins and George Gruhn—was Tacoma’s first guitar model. It has a relatively short 19.1″ scale and is tuned to the same intervals as standard guitar tuning, but a fourth higher, to A rather than the conventional E, making it equivalent to a conventional guitar with a capo on the fifth fret. It introduced the paisley sound hole and the Voiced Bracing Support system. An ultra-portable guitar with a great sound..."
