This unusual model 545 mandolin in perfectly playable condition was built for the Cremona company, Czechoslovakia (Schönbach) on the verge of the 1940s and 50s. It is quite a rare high-end instrument based on the design of pre-war Hofner 545 – after the war, these instruments were made in several variants and complemented the range of high-quality laminate archtop guitars made by Alfred Bräuer (the boards used to manufacture these mandolins were prepared by his brother Jan who worked for the same company). It was checked, cleaned and retains great playability and beautiful projecting sound!
The instrument is in a great, fully playable condition and the individual components are all original (including the specific carved rosewood and ebony bridge, the tuners with new buttons and the tailpiece). The neck is straight with a comfortable action, it has an ebony fretboard and lightly dressed brass frets in perfect shape, the tuners work great too. The neck was properly reglued sometime in the past (holding perfectly, with a hairline crack in the heel that was properly glued together too) and the back binding was replaced for new one. The finish is generally in a very nice condition with some minor blemishes and scuffs typical for a played instrument of this age.
The mandolin is now stringed up with a set of 10 gauge Martin strings. A brief sound sample of this beautiful specimen is featured in this listing as well.
