Amplifiers For Sale on Reverb
For as long as there have been electric instruments, there have been amplifiers to plug them into. Today's market offers a wider selection than ever before, with fantastic options for acoustic and electric guitars, basses, keyboards and really anything with an output jack.
For guitars in particular, the range of options is extremely diverse with everything from vintage combo amps from Fender and Vox to modern boutique heads from the likes of Dr. Z. No matter what sort of music you play and what type of instrument you play it on, you can find your dream amp here on Reverb.
What Is An Amplifier?
An amplifier is a device that takes the output signal from your instrument and amplifies it either via vacuum tubes (in a tube amp) or transistors (in a solid-state amp). You can typically purchase amps either as an amplifier head and separate speaker cabinet, or via a combo amp unit, which has the amp head and speaker in a single box.
What Are The Different Types of Amplifiers?
Broadly speaking, there are dozens of types of amplifiers. We’d start by dividing by instrument: Guitar, bass, and keyboard are the big three. From there, you can have an amp head and cabinet, or a combo unit. Then, you can have a solid-state amp or a tube-driven amp. Types of amps don’t end there, however—there are boutique amps, modeling amps, British-voiced amps, American-voiced amps, and more.
Do All Amplifiers Sound the Same?
In a word, no. Most amp manufacturers pride themselves in creating unique-sounding amplifiers. Many amps sound distinctive based on the parts they use (e.g., tubes, speakers) and their construction. Of course, some amps are based on the way famous amps sound, but most sound distinct.
What Kind of Amplifier Do I Need?
First thing's first: You probably need an amplifier that’s designed for your instrument. What we mean is, you don’t want to be playing your bass through a guitar amp. From there, you have a few questions you need to ask yourself:
- Do I want an amp head and cabinet, or a combo?
- How much volume (wattage) do I need?
- Do I want a tube-driven amp, a solid-state amp, or a modeling amp?
From there, experimentation and research is key. Listen to demos and play as many amps as you can to find the best amp for you and your music.
