Who says you can't have it all? The Seymour Duncan SHPR-1 P-Rails comes surprisingly close. The patent-pending P-Rails fit three voices into a standard humbucker footprint: a P-90 style coil and a narrow rail single coil that combine to form a full humbucker. We first discovered these pickups in a couple of Godin guitar models and were extremely impressed with how they sounded. While do-it-all pickups require some compromise, in our opinion the P-Rails really nailed the P-90 tone, and that was probably our favorite setting. The single coil setting may not have the chime of a true Strat pickup, but it sounds leagues better than most split humbuckers. The humbucker setting is pretty hefty, sitting somewhere between Duncan's '59 and JB models. Wiring is easy, and it takes only a simple 3-way (on-off-on) mini toggle to access the different voices (see diagram). This bridge version (SHPR-1b) fits any standard humbucker route and mounting ring and adds true versatility to any humbucker-equipped guitar. Pair it with the SHPR-1n neck model, which is reverse wound and reverse polarity, for hum-canceling P-90 or rail combinations between the two pickups. It is a great choice for players who want vintage P-90 grit, Strat-style single coil snap, and a fat humbucker in one hybrid pickup. The neck version is wound RWRP so that, you can use both P90s or both Rails together and achieve hum-canceling operation.
