For 2014 LPJ has undergone some changes - it got some updates, including new uncovered pickups which are a little more upfront about screaming 'Gibson USA humbucker!', and other appointments consistent with the 2014 model year innovations. Let's have a closer look.
The LPJ starts with a mahogany body shape, updated with traditional weight relief. This takes some of the heft out of owning a famously heavy Les Paul but still leaves behind plenty of wood for the classic mahogany body tone. The top is two-piece carved maple, adding snappy attack and clear treble to the warm mahogany body. The neck is carved to the Classic '50s rounded shape - deeper than the slim '60s profile found on many models, and great for really digging in on single-note riffs and giving you extra leverage for wide bluesy bends. The fretboard is rosewood, another classic Les Paul element.
To simultaneously keep costs down and imbue the LPJ with plenty of attitude and style, the LPJ uses a matte satin finish which is less time-intensive to apply. This type of finish ages and wears in an attractive way and also allows the wood to breathe more. The Trapezoid fretboard inlays are a nod to the Les Paul Standard, with the same special Gibson 120th Anniversary logo at the 12th fret that you'll find on a number of models in 2014.
The road-ready vibe is carried over to the hardware too, with a satin chrome tune-o-matic bridge ands top tailpiece as well as non-slip black Supreme Grip speed knobs which make it easy to perform volume swells, control adjustments or just good old-fashioned between-song mutes with ease.
Perhaps the most obvious change though between the 2013 and 2014 LPJ is the choice of pickups. Out are the black-covered Modern Classic passive humbuckers, in are a set of new '61-style Zebra humbuckers. These pickups feature unbalanced windings (that is to say, the pickup coils are different to each other instead of being matched like those of the 498T and 490R of the 2013 model LPJ).
The LPJ isn't alone in the line-up: there's also the SGJ, which applies a similar aesthetic to the all-mahogany SG outline. Again the 2014 SGJ features updates including the new pickups, knobs and 120th Anniversary inlay.
This LPJ has barely been used and kept in a case for most of its life. See the last picture the only small blemish on the side of the body. Other than that this guitar is basically brand new. CASE INCLUDED.
