The Godin A6 Ultra is one of those guitars that can fill a real gap in just about anyone’s collection. Plug it in and you have an electric, an acoustic, or a very useful blend of the two. Unplugged, it has enough volume for quiet practice or couch strumming, yet it plays and feels much more like an electric than a traditional acoustic. It is also a terrific value for a high-quality, North American-made guitar.
This is a Godin “SF” model, which means it has a small cosmetic defect. Godin is very picky about these details, and you get a fully warranted new guitar at a nice savings. Whether you use the mixed output or run the electric and acoustic outputs separately, the A6 Ultra covers a wide range of tones and really shines as a live-performance instrument.
With the split outputs, a typical setup is to run the neck humbucker into a conventional guitar amp and the bridge transducer into an acoustic amp, or through a good preamp direct to the PA. The neck humbucker is voiced on the mellow side, and the chambered body gives it a round, deep quality that does a surprisingly convincing job of getting into hollowbody-jazz territory. The bridge piezo is bright and crisp, but largely free of the crackle and quack that can make some piezo systems hard to love. Tested through a Fishman Loudbox with a touch of reverb, it sounded clean, lively, and very usable; unless you are a hardcore folkie, it would easily hold its own in most performing situations. Direct into a PA, it benefits from a little signal conditioning, such as a good acoustic DI preamp or Aural Exciter.
Using the blended output, you can dial up all electric, all acoustic, or any useful mix in between. Blending a little neck pickup into a mostly acoustic signal adds body and low-end warmth, giving you a richer amplified acoustic tone. For players doing primarily acoustic work, the blended output may be all they ever need.
At home, the Godin A6 Ultra is great for sitting around, writing, or practicing both electric and acoustic parts. It is not as full-sounding as a true acoustic, but it puts out a reasonable amount of unplugged volume, the slim body is easy to hold, and at about 6 pounds it travels easily while taking up far less space than a traditional acoustic.
