Dingwall Customshop ABZ 3-4 Marina Green

The ABZ is Dingwall's "entry-level" custom shop. Of course, that is a way too disrespectful way to express the awesomeness of this instrument, so let's put it another way; the ABZ features relatively basic specs for Dingwall custom shop standards. And in the good sense of the word; no fuss and just all tone! In addition, the ABZ is also the lightest series of Dingwall and this bass weighs only 3.44 kg / 7.58 lbs.

Either way; every handmade, Canadian Dingwall is always special and an absolute joy for us to offer to the world! This ABZ was built especially for Summer Namm 2022 and we managed to get hold of it.
This fine exampel is a fairly modest version of an ABZ, but as always Dingwall has managed to sneak in some special options in this bass. And in principle this bass is special, as a passive 4-string Custom Shop, with three pickups and this particular appearance is absolutely unique on the planet!

So, what does a modest ABZ hide under the hood? Well; a two-piece, tone-matched, solid ash body with a 5-piece, bolt-on maple neck with optional maple fingerboard. The 4-string version has a mulitcale with a range from 34" to 36.25", 12" fretboard radius and the neck has a medium thin C-shape neck carve. Perhaps even more striking than the Marina Green satin finish of the body, are the optional matching color Speedo Bar inlays.

Regarding the electronics, this ABZ is equipped with 3 pieces of Super Fatty II double-coil pickups, passive tone control, 4 position pickup switch and optional series-parallel toggle switches for each of the pickups. This setup hides an enormous versatility and variety of sounds.
To begin with, the Super Fatty's sound...well, super fat; thick low end and beautifully fresh top end. Very balanced and powerful output. With the 4-position pickup switch you can choose pickup wiring in the tradition of a jazzbass (but not stepless of course), so; bridge pickup, bridge + neck pickup and neck pickup, switching through position 1, 3 and 4 of the switch relatively. Position 2 enables the center pickup in combination with the bridge pickup and so, wiring those two pickups together as a humbucker.
On top of that, the coils of each of the three pickups can be switched in either series or parallel wiring, using the toggle switches. The series wiring provides a significant output and mid boost...for each pickup that is. So, you do the math on the amount of sound combinations! A pre-amp would truely be an overkill on this bass...

With this ABZ you can tackle all styles. We can't imagine anything else! It is both modern and traditional enough, punchy and very well balanced. Everything about this bass feels and sounds like the absolute hi-end instrument it is.
