A gorgeous original 19th century terz guitar in excellent condition. Very rare! See Video.
A wonderful professional grade instrument constructed with the finest materials. Spruce top and flaming maple sides and back. Ebony pegs and bridge pins with mother of pearl inlay. The guitar is in very good condition not having ever had any cracks in soundboard sides or back.
Neck and fretboard are impeccable. Excellent string action. Very comfortable to play.
There is no label so the builder and exact year are not known, but mid to late 19th century wood be a safe estimate.
An authentic Terz guitar is a very rare find. I am sadly parting with this gem of a guitar to purchase a theorbo.
Excerpts from the Early romantic guitar page:
The Terz guitar is tuned a minor third higher than a regular guitar. Even though the Terz guitar is tuned three notes higher, you play ordinary guitar music on it, except it sounds a third higher than written.
In the early 19th century, the terz guitar was so popular that the majority of duets published called for the primary guitar one part as terz guitar with one normal second guitar. The terz guitar was used for ensemble situations, where its treble range and brightness resulted in superior projection: it is often found in guitar duos, piano with guitar duos, and other combinations, including terz guitar with full orchestra, as in the case of Giuliani's 3rd concerto. The amount of music written for terz guitar in ensemble situations was vast.
String length: 56 cm
Width at nut: 4.4 cm
Currently strung with Nylgut Ambra 800 strings.
(unfortunately I do not have Terz guitar strings at the moment so the video sample features the guitar in standard tuning. It has a far superior sound tuned a minor third higher.)
