OPEN TO SENSIBLE (!) OFFERS

Simply put, this guitar is simply too good to sit in my collection – it’s a crime that it’s not being used and I need the money, so it’s up for sale. It took me three long years to track one of these down – a 1980 Super Real EG1000C in stellar condition. I’d put this up against a True Historic any day of the week.

Like the EGF1200/1800, it has the fabled Dry Z pickups. It also sports Grovers, a chunky but very comfortable neck, nitro finish, ebony board, FEB, MOP inlays, and unrivalled build quality. The neck is straight and true, action is low and could go lower, and there are no issues whatsoever with barely any fret wear - the factory fret work is simply stellar, so playability is A1 over the whole fretboard. Mahogany one-layer body, maple two-piece top, mahogany one piece neck. Weight is about 10.5 lbs, just like a Custom should be. Dowel-reinforced deep tenon:

The level of craftsmanship is second to none. There is no gap at all between the MOP and the ebony. There are a handful of tiny dings, and the pickup selector script has faded, but overall condition is really quite stunning for a guitar of this age – see the pics. There is remarkably little tarnishing of the gold hardware, which leads me to believe that this is something of a ‘wardrobe wonder’. The binding has yellowed beautifully to a deep near-orange... just like a 60-year-old Gibson. The sound is clear, ballsy, and amazingly deep, but remains articulate even with tonnes of overdrive. Sustain is A1.

Lots of inferior Grecos are sold masquerading as this model. Please note (1) the double-diamond headstock inlay, (2) the thick Greco headstock script, (3) the Z on the pickups, (4) the gorgeous genuine MOP inlays.

Being a perfectionist, the guitar has had new volume pots tuned with parallel resistors to match the tone of the pickups (getting optimal loading), and the ceramic caps replaced with +genuine+ 50s ‘bees that measure around 0.15uF – perfect for an LP. There is also a series cap on the neck pickup to match the bass output of the bridge. The original caps and pots will be included in the sale, or I can just return the guitar to 100% stock– whatever the buyer wants.

In sum, this really is the next best thing to a 1st-class vintage Gibbo and you are very unlikely to see one for sale in this condition again.

Near-mint Hiscox hard case included.
