Jake Cinninger stopped by the Reverb studios to talk with us about Umphrey's McGee's upcoming release, ZONKEY. Jake tells us that the idea for a mashup album has been floating around the band's collective mind for 8-10 years now and that ZONKEY is the incarnation of that idea.
Umphrey's McGee took songs that were in relative keys with the same tempos and mashed them over different vocals. The result? Combinations like Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" and Beastie Boys's "Sabotage" crunched together to make "Strangletage." Jake talked us through what it takes to find the right tones and sounds for these mashups and what gear the band used to make sure that every guitar tone and drum sound were accurate.
Check out the band's website for touring information and to preorder ZONKEY, available November 11th.
