Gearspotting: Dreamville's Revenge of the Dreamers III Sessions

For all of the world's recording sessions happening at any given moment, it's still pretty rare for the sessions themselves to become a story. And not since Kanye West invited a legion of producers and rappers for six months of "Rap Camp" in a Hawaii studio, while recording My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, has hip-hop had a story like J. Cole's Revenge of the Dreamers III sessions.

This January, Cole and Dreamville label executive Ibrahim Hamad sent out "golden ticket" invitations to some of their favorite artists from across the industry, including household names and up-and-coming talent. The 10-day recording event became the talk of the hip-hop world. Artists that received the invites made their way down to Atlanta's Tree Sound Studios. Those who didn't, presumably, kept checking and re-checking their mail.

Dreamville released a documentary of the proceedings, and we jumped at the chance to try to identify all the gear we could for our first "Gearspotting" feature. In what will be an ongoing series, we here at Reverb will put our gear knowledge to the test, trying to spot the notable gear in concert docs, music videos, award shows, and more.

The assembled crew for the Revenge of the Dreamers III sessions included Vince Staples, Saba, Smino, T.I., and even Rick Ross, in addition to the Dreamville roster: Ari Lennox, J.I.D, Bas, Omen, EarthGang, and more. The production talent included Kal Banx, Bink!, Mike Will Made It, Monte Booker, Cam O'bi, No I.D., and many others. It was a crowded affair, with everyone fighting for space in the various recording rooms at the Tree Sound complex.
