Although Greyhounds have been playing it for over a decade at live shows, “Cuz I’m Here” finally found a home on the band’s most recent record, 2016’s Change of Pace. Holding a special place in the band’s heart, “Cuz I’m Here” represents the first collaborative effort between all three members of Greyhounds.
Zack Littlefield, Greyhounds’ drummer, wrote all of the lyrics to “Cuz I’m Here.” When he was writing, he said, he was thinking of traveling with the band and being gone all the time, and about how that causes disconnects in relationships. But he was also thinking about his grandmother when he wrote the lyrics to the song; about how someone can go through their entire life and then at the very end, be shunted off to the side and frequently forgotten.
But, like keyboardist and vocalist Anthony Farrell says, it almost doesn’t matter what the meaning behind the song is. Like any kind of art, although it will still have specific meaning to the artist, once it’s out in the world, it’s up to the audience to interpret it and glean from it what they want.
