1972 Fender Stratocaster – Natural – Maple Neck - Original Grey Bobbin Pickups – 3.45 kgFor sale is a beautiful early 1972 Fender Stratocaster from the CBS era, still featuring several late-1971 specifications, including the single string tree and, most importantly, the fantastic original grey bobbin pickups.This is a great-sounding vintage Strat with everything you would hope for from an instrument of this era – plenty of character, resonance and classic vintage Strat tone.Despite being more than 50 years old, the guitar is in very good overall condition, with only a few minor dings and some fine lacquer checking/cracks that give it exactly the kind of natural ageing you would expect from a well-preserved vintage instrument.There have been a couple of modifications over the years, which are worth mentioning clearly:The body has been routed underneath the pickguard in what is commonly referred to as a “swimming pool” route. The pickguard itself is original and still has the original stamps underneath. For some reason, a few additional screws were added to the pickguard at some point in its life – possibly to prevent an ageing/shrinking pickguard from lifting. The pickguard currently fits the guitar nicely, but the additional screw holes are of course still present.Apart from this, the guitar retains its original pickups, bridge, saddles, nut, tremolo system and original 3-way switch.One of the things that really surprised me about this Strat is how exceptionally well it plays. The action can be set remarkably low – better than on almost any other Strat I have played – and there is only relatively minor playwear on the frets, leaving plenty of life in them.The guitar has a beautiful ash body with its Natural finish, which has aged and ambered wonderfully over the decades. It has exactly the warm, golden appearance that makes these early-'70s Natural Strats so attractive.Another major plus is the weight: only 3.45 kg (7.60 lbs), putting it very much on the lighter side for a CBS-era Stratocaster.
