This is a 2012 Gibson Flying V Traditional Pro - Relic Custom in a Wine Red Finish. We selected this particular Flying V to relic and customize because of the unique design, which incorporates an inline control knob layout similar to a ‘58 Flying V, but with solid top and no pickguard.  To top it off, it has a beautiful single ply cream binding on the body and the neck.  

To start off, we stripped this guitar down to a husk, and it’s been fully shielded with conductive shielding paint, and the control cavity cover has been shielded with copper shielding tape.  Fully shielding a guitar is very important to minimize the electronic signal interference because we chose to keep with the “Traditional” theme, and we used un-potted Aged Nickel Gibson Custombucker pickups, to deliver an authentic PAF sound.  

For the electronics, we expanded upon the “Pro” theme and we went with what professional guitarists have relied on for decades, and we used DiMarzio Custom Taper 500K pots for the volume controls, and a DiMarzio Custom Taper 1 Meg tone pot with a DiMarzio .047 Polyester Film Capacitor for a smooth and warm tone.  Then everything is wired together with 22 Gauge Gavitt cloth wire, and a Switchcraft toggle switch and input jack.  

For the hardware, we wanted to keep the “Traditional” theme and we went with Gibson Deluxe Tuners Vintage Aged Nickel Green Buttons, Advanced Plating aged nickel plated aluminum Nashville Tune-O-Matic Bridge & Posts, Advanced Plating aged nickel plated aluminum Stop Bar Tailpiece, and Advanced Plating aged nickel plated brass Tailpiece Studs. Then to bring it all together, all of the screws are aged nickel plated stainless steel screws.

The last couple of parts are the finishing touches to make it truly stand out as Custom Flying V, such as: DiMarzio Cream Speed Knobs, Custom Gibson 3 Ply Cream/Black/Cream Truss Rod Cover Chrome Logo, Graph Tech Aged TUSQ XL Nut, & Aged Nickel Schaller Security Straplocks.

We love the super fast playing Gibson Flying V Slim Taper neck profile with Rosewood fretboard and the frets are level, crowned, and dressed (See Photos). We also cleaned and oiled the fretboard and the neck has a really comfortable broken in feel.  What’s great is that the body of this guitar has naturally aged and would be in between a Light Aged Relic and Heavy Relic that the Gibson Custom Shop does, and it has some marks/scratches/dents/dings in various spots, but it’s still in very good overall condition (See Photos).  All of the nickel hardware has been aged and relic’d by us, and this Flying V has been setup with D’Addario EXL 10-46 strings with nice low action.  It comes with the original Gibson USA hard case, which has also naturally aged from use, and is fully functional (See Photos).  

This Gibson Flying V Relic Custom is a very light guitar that‘s plays and feels really smooth, looks beautiful, and sounds so much like a vintage Flying V, that you won’t want to put it down…
