Antoine Di Mauro Flat-Back Mandolin 1950's

Di Mauro Gypsy guitars, and particularly those made by Antoine Di Mauro, occupy an essential place in the history of this musical style.

But this is also true of his mandolins, which were used as much in gypsy and folk music as in Irish music, for example.

Born in Catania in 1900, Antoine Di Mauro was the brother of Joseph Di Mauro “senior” (1893-1966) and the father of Joseph Di Mauro “junior” (1932-2001). Before moving to Paris in 1934, he was already making guitars and mandolins in Sicily.

On his arrival in the capital, he continued his luthier activity in the workshop he set up at the back of a furniture store in the 20ᵉ arrondissement. In 1936, he opened his first workshop impasse Rançon, then, after a move in 1942, he established himself at 47 rue de la Réunion, still in the 20ᵉ, in his famous “LUTHERIE MODERNE” workshop.

Antoine Di Mauro is behind several iconic Selmer Maccaferri-style gypsy jazz guitar models, such as the Saint Louis Blues, the Boogie-Woogie and the Spécial Chorus.

Many renowned artists have played on a Di Mauro guitar, including Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Henri Salvador, Sacha Distel, Jacques Higelin, Pat Metheny and, of course, Django Reinhardt.
