This PTB308 is a bouzouki from Antonio Pinto Carvalho, crafted using a Portuguese guitar body, which gives it a richer, fuller sound with more bass resonance than standard Irish flat-back bouzoukis. It is an older version of the current PTB 308, made before APC shifted production to cheaper lasered-cut woods and mass manufacturing in China. Unlike the newer models, this bouzouki was built artisanally in the North of Portugal, using high-quality solid woods and traditional craftsmanship.
The top is made of solid Englemann spruce. The back and sides are crafted from solid African ovangkol, the neck is solid African mahogany, and the fingerboard is Australian blackwood. The glossy highlights the beauty of the wood grain.
This bouzouki has been professionally set up by a luthier with unison strings to achieve the authentic Irish bouzouki sound. It is an ideal entry-level instrument for beginners who want a richer and more dynamic sound compared to standard Irish bouzoukis.
The only minor flaw is that the nickel tailpiece has a couple of broken hooks. However you can still attach the strings to the remaining hooks. Replacing the tailpiece is an easy and inexpensive fix.
It comes with a brand-new set of strings as a gift, along with a padded bag that fits it perfectly.
