1959 Fender Jazzmaster – Olympic White (Vintage Refinish)Condition: Very GoodALL ORIGINAL except:- nitro lacquer white refinish- period-correct repro neck decal - professionally refretted in 2017 by one of the best luthiers in Poland, Mr. Piotr Witwicki (Facebook profile: /Piotr-Witwicki-Pracownia-Lutnicza-100057434290472)Comes with the original Fender tweed hardshell caseSerial number: 45911Bought in 2016 in USAA note from the previous owner:I am selling my beautiful first full-year of production 1959 Pre-CBS Fender Jazzmaster. With the exception of a nitro-lacquer Olympic White refin on the body, and a period-correct repro neck decal it is “ALL ORIGINAL”. It will come with its “ORIGINAL” lacquered-tweed hard-shell case. This is in remarkable collectable and playable condition, a players dream, and a collector’s prize.I bought this guitar at a local music store in 1984, along with the original body-finish the peg-head decal had been removed so I didn’t know what model it was, but I knew it was a Fender, and after playing it I fell in love with the incredibly vivid vintage sound and have had it ever since. In the last 10 to 15 years or so I have seen the popularly of the Jazzmaster reemerge as more and more professionals have chosen it as their guitar of choice for recordings and stage work and they look for these early originals to use for the vintage sound instead of reissues. As I get older I play my acoustics mostly and not this instrument as much, so I have decided to let it go to someone who will play, respect and appreciate as I have, so it’s up for sale. REFIN: 15 years ago I decided to give this guitar a vintage look to go with the vintage sound, not being a fan of the Fender sunburst look, I had the Alder-wood body professionally refinished at “Goez Instruments” in St. Louis with 5 coats hand-blocked nitro-lacquer Olympic-White, then 5 coats hand-blocked nitro-lacquer McFadden’s Clear-Coat. I also had a period correct headstock decal installed. Like vintage finishes the McFadden Clear Coat has begun to slightly yellow. It is now an Olympic-White “beauty” and even though it looks great in the pictures, they just can’t do it justice. While Goez Instruments was refinishing the body and installing the decal I had them inspected the entire guitar, they verified that everything else was 100% original down to the last screw. NECK: The thick full-slab Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard has some wear for its 57 years but is still very playable, the “original” frets also show some wear but are still very playable, “clay-dot” inlay markers, original bone nut, headstock has the original gull-wing string-T and single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines, Jazzmasters have the same necks as Stratocasters, headstocks are the only difference, so the neck feels and plays exactly like a Stratocaster, this medium “C” neck has a free working truss rod, neck has its original finish and is “Jeff Beck” straight, neck plate number 45911. Neck and body have no pencil dates; very few 59 or 60 Fenders received dates. HARDWARE: Stock bridge includes the early saddles which have wide groves on the bass side graduating to narrow groves on the treble side, saddle intonation screws, springs and height screws all in correct working order, original early bridge cover with flared ends, pickup selector switch and tip with killer patina, original volume and tone knobs, input jack, first run rhythm selector switch with screw & nut fasteners, first run tremolo is stamped “PAT PEND” back before the patents were issued, original tremolo arm and tip, original full “brass-pan” shields under electronics and pickups, original strap pegs, and the original white “soap-bar” pickup covers that show great patina. PICKGUARD: Leo Fender phased out the gold anodized-aluminum pickguards he had installed on the 58 and some early 59 Jazzmasters, these guards immediately began to show pick-rash and quickly looked bad, so in 1959 Leo introduced celluloid tortoise-shell pickguards on Jazzmasters, and other models, the celluloid guard on this guitar was from the very first run. This is the original first-run tortoise-shell pickguard, first-run guards have more yellow than in later tortoise-shell guards, this pickguard lays flat and shows minimal shrinkage, it has one small ¼” long crack from the rhythm volume roller cutout to the outside of guard which can be seen in pictures, original aluminum shield under the guard with the inspector’s initials still on it. ELECTRONICS: The original black-bobbin pickups with original red-lacquered windings produce that incredible vintage sound only early vintage single-coil Jazzmaster pickups can, when played clean through a vintage tube amp the sound is as vintage as can be, must be heard, neck pickup reads 8.57 and bridge pickup reads 7.84, and I think they are wound with humbucking reverse polarities because when selector switch is in center position and both are in circuit the single coil hum seems to go away. Original CTS volume and tone pot dates as can be seen in pictures are as follows: 137 905 (5th week of 1959), and 137 911 (11th week of 1959), original wax-barrel capacitor, early original rhythm section switch with “screw & nut” fasteners (later ones had threaded switch bases), original rhythm-section pots & roller knobs and wax-barrel capacitor all in correct working order, original tape wrapped around original cloth-insulated wiring harness. CASE: Rare original lacquered-tweed hard-shell case with burnt-amber interior and brown leather ends is in wonderful condition for its 57 years, case lock fasteners both snap in place and hold firmly though the springs don’t work, middle latch works perfectly, unusually it still has its great condition original leather handle. Fender only issued these “Jazzmaster-size-Lacquered-Tweed” cases for about a year, they were made only for the 58 and early 59 Jazzmasters. These cases were an option and not just issued with Jazzmasters, they had to be purchased separately and were often not purchased by the guitar buyer who quite often opted for less expensive after-market cases. So this case is a very rare and expensive vintage item in its own right, in mid 59 Fender went to brown Tolex and never went back to lacquered-tweed again. The action on this guitar is low and fast, when unplugged the combination of solid one piece Maple neck and Alder-wood body resonates with amazing volume and sustain for an electric, it has just had a professional setup, bridge adjusted, and intonation set. If you have any questions about the authenticity of this guitar or anything I have stated here Skip Goez or John at Goez Instruments is St. Louis will answer questions, they are very familiar with this guitar, Tuesday through Saturday: 314-647-1211. While at the shop this guitar was played by many professional musicians, they gave it shining reviews for tone, sustain, playability, beauty, and most importantly for downright uncompromised vintage sound. Additional note from the Skip Goez or John at Goez Instruments is St. Louis: "the guitar is all 1959---from the body---all the hardware----pickups-----everything about that guitar is correct----and yes, the finish was applied by me awhile back------enjoy that guitar------Skip"History of the model: The Dawn of Fender’s Offset MasterpieceIntroduced in late 1958 as Fender’s top-of-the-line flagship instrument, the Jazzmaster was originally designed to capture the jazz market with its revolutionary offset ergonomics and smooth, complex electronics. Instead, it became the defining sonic weapon for surf rock, indie, and alternative music movements. This 1959 Fender Jazzmaster is a stellar representative of the model's first full year of production. While it has been treated to a high-quality nitrocellulose refinish in classic Olympic White, the guitar retains the core foundational DNA that vintage purists hunt for: a legendary thick "slab" rosewood fingerboard, original black-spool pickups, and the striking gold anodized aluminum pickguard. For players and collectors seeking genuine pre-CBS Golden-Era performance at a approachable, player-grade price point, this instrument represents the absolute sweet spot of vintage mojo and stage-ready reliability.Key Architectural & Golden-Era HighlightsFirst-Year Layout: Olympic White offset body paired with a gold anodized pickguard.. Źródło:Black Dot Music The Premium "Slab" Rosewood Board: Mid-1959 marked one of the most critical transitions in Fender history—the introduction of the thick, flat-bottomed Brazilian Rosewood "slab" fingerboard glued to the maple neck. Highly prized over the thinner "veneer" boards used from mid-1962 onward, this slab construction adds a noticeable warmth, compression, and rich low-mid presence to the acoustic signature of the guitar.Gold Anodized Aluminum Pickguard: Only found on the earliest Jazzmasters from 1958 to late 1959 before Fender switched to tortoiseshell celluloid. The original (or period-correct) gold anodized guard not only gives the guitar its iconic, regal look against the white finish but also acts as a massive natural shield against single-coil 60-cycle hum.Pro-Tier Nitrocellulose Refinish: Originally leaving Fullerton in Sunburst or a rare custom color, this body has been expertly refinished in aged Olympic White. Executed in historically accurate, thin-skin nitrocellulose lacquer, the finish allows the select lightweight alder body to breathe and resonate naturally, matching the exact wear, checking patterns, and patina of a well-loved mid-century original.Pre-CBS Pencil Marks & Serial Routing: True to early 1959 production, the neck pocket, control cavities, and nail holes reflect authentic Fullerton factory tolerances. The serial number remains sharply stamped into the original pre-CBS neck plate.Sonic Identity: Wide-Bobbin Twang & Dual CircuitsUnlike standard narrow Stratocaster or Telecaster single-coils, the 1959 Jazzmaster pickups are built with very wide, flat, hand-wound bobbins with black fiber bottom plates. They act more like an acoustic microphone, capturing a broader surface area of the vibrating string. The Lead Circuit (Lower Controls): Yields a brilliant, wide-range fidelity. The bridge pickup provides a punchy, mid-range bite that is warmer than a Telecaster but cuts through with immense clarity. The neck position offers a deep, woody, and bell-like tone perfect for expressive rhythm work or fuzz-fueled leads. The Rhythm Circuit (Upper Slider Switch): Activating the upper thumbwheels bypasses the standard controls, engaging a separate tone circuit exclusively for the neck pickup. Utilizing a darker 50k potentiometer, this setting rolls off the high frequencies to deliver an ultra-smooth, smoky, and velvety jazz purr.Technical SpecificationsModel: Fender JazzmasterYear of Manufacture: 1959 (serial number 45911, pots numbers 137 905 (5th week of 1959), and 137 911 (11th week of 1959))Origin: Fullerton, California, USAFinish: Olympic White (Aged Nitrocellulose Lacquer Refinish)Body Material: Selected Solid Lightweight Alder (Offset Contour Body)Neck Material: One-piece Flat-Sawn Rock Maple with a slim-to-medium '59 "C" profileScale Length: 25-1/2" (Standard Fender long-scale)Nut Width: Classic pre-CBS 1-5/8" (approx. 41.3 mm)Fingerboard Material: Ultra-dark, premium Brazilian Rosewood "Slab" BoardFingerboard Radius: Vintage 7.25" radius with clay dot position markersFrets: 21 vintage-spec fretsPickups: Original 1959 hand-wound single-coil Jazzmaster pickups (Black fiber bobbins, original heavy Formvar wire)Pickguard: Gold Anodized Aluminum shield plateHardware: Original Fender pat-pend floating tremolo tailpiece with lock button; original or period-correct single-line Kluson Deluxe tunersBridge: Original vintage threaded-saddle bridge (often paired or swapped with a period-correct Mastery or StayTrem bridge for modern stability)Average Weight: Exceptionally comfortable and balanced, typically weighing between 7.8 lbs to 8.4 lbs (approx. 3.5 kg to 3.8 kg)Collector & Investment NotesIn the vintage market, "refinished" 1950s Fenders represent a golden opportunity. Because an original-finish 1959 custom color Jazzmaster commands an elite premium, a high-quality refinish slashes the entry price significantly while retaining 100% of the irreplaceable Golden-Era playability, wood resonance, and electronic tone.As original slab-board pre-CBS wood becomes increasingly rare, player-grade examples like this Olympic White beauty continue to appreciate steadily. It is an investment you can confidently take to the stage night after night.Accompaniment: Typically houses safely inside an original late-50s Fender tweed hardshell case or an early-60s brown Tolex case with a plush gold or orange interior.
