I hang out with some big mix engineers and used to be one myself.  In the secret weapon department are the glorious late 70's table top analog delay units.  A lot of the best sounds you hear on vocals and guitars are these sacred beasts.  Better than any pedal- why? Because the holy 3005 chip is running at full voltage from a beefy power supply.  They are quieter than any pedal and deeper sounding.

Ibanez/Maxon made quite a few table tops, along with Boss/Roland and Yamaha among others.  I have heard them all.  The Ibanez AD100 is the best and yeah that's an opinion but it is formed from experience from a mix engineer with ears who has tried them all.  This is my personal unit.  Kept for many years as one of those 'will never sell' pieces.  Well, you run out of space after a while.
