Founding guitarist of August Burns Red, he has established himself as one of the most respected riff makers in modern metal. His playing combines surgical precision, controlled aggression, and a highly developed melodic sense. For him, technique is never gratuitous: every riff remains clear, every harmonic serves the composition, and every attack carries real weight. This philosophy is fully reflected in the JBBM40, a guitar designed for the stage, the studio, and massive modern chords, while still offering a genuine sense of fluidity and musicality. The RGA platform gives it a tremendous amount of personality. The okoume body, sculpted with the slight arch typical of the series, immediately feels more organic and comfortable than a completely flat RG. The contours naturally fit the body, and the instrument feels surprisingly light for a guitar aimed at modern metal. The neck also deserves high praise. The JBBM profile remains fast without falling into the ultra-thin territory that can sometimes become tiring. The 3-piece maple/bubinga construction provides rigidity and stability, while the ebony fretboard adds the sharp, precise attack that players love in modern styles. Under the fingers, the response is immediate: palm mutes hit hard, alternate picking stays clean, and complex chords retain excellent definition even under high gain. The jumbo frets contribute greatly to this effortless feel. The choice of the fixed Gibraltar Standard III bridge is particularly smart. JB Brubaker clearly prioritizes efficiency and stability over gimmicks. The result is ultra-stable tuning, excellent vibration transfer, and a very direct feel under the picking hand. Factory-tuned in Drop C, the guitar instantly feels at home. Riffs have weight, the strings maintain just the right tension, and the sustain is impressive. For modern rhythm playing and highly precise attacks, this setup works remarkably well. The EMG 81 / 85 electronics perfectly complete the instrument’s character. The bridge EMG 81 remains an absolute reference for metal: massive precision, razor-sharp attack, ultra-clear saturation, and the ability to make every note stand out even through walls of gain. But the real pleasant surprise often comes from the neck EMG 85, which is rounder, more organic, and surprisingly expressive for singing leads or more atmospheric passages. The guitar is not just brutal — it remains musical and articulate. Even under very high saturation, the sound maintains excellent note separation.Ultimately, this JBBM40 PW is probably one of the most successful modern metal signature guitars in its price range. It has a strong visual identity, formidable playability, and an immediately addictive tonal efficiency. A guitar built to play loud, clean, and for a long time, with the deeply satisfying feeling of holding a true professional musician’s tool in your hands.
