Up for sale, a 1959 Guild X-50 in excellent condition and in good working order. This classic Guild archtop has a sweet acoustic tone with modest projection and a clarity that translates nicely through the pickup.  The original pickup has been swapped in favor of a P-90, which adds a richness and growl to the electric sound that arguably makes this a more versatile and lively instrument than if it had retained the more 'polite' stock pickup!  Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this X-50 has low, comfortable action and is currently strung with a set of 11-50 Thomatik Jazz Swing flatwound strings.
The neck has a medium C profile with soft shoulders and a thick slab rosewood fretboard.  The back of the neck has been worn down to the bare mahogany from years of consistent use, and was subsequently lightly oversprayed with clear nitro lacquer for a very smooth, silky feel.  The original frets are intact and have been recently leveled and crowned, currently showing no notable wear and playing exceedingly well all the way up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots.  On the headstock, the original Kluson open back strip tuners are intact, turn smoothly and hold pitch well.  The raised pearloid "Guild" logo is also intact on the face of the headstock along with the original truss rod cover.
On the body, all of the original hardware is intact including the nickel trapeze tailpiece, carved and compensated Brazilian rosewood bridge, DeArmond knobs and black one-ply pickguard.  The original pickup route was enlarged slightly to accommodate the current P-90 pickup and there are also four tiny doweled mounting holes from a previously removed pickup mounting ring (seen in photo #8).  The P-90 offers little evidence as to its manufacturer, but is sounds extremely good and is a solid match for this body size and the Thomastik flatwound strings.
The body binding shows considerable shrinkage, which is very common for Guilds of this vintage, yet the binding is still completely intact and only shows separation around the waist of the guitar (photo #13) and on the neck heel cap.  The lovely two-tone sunburst finish on the body is original, and the nitro lacquer is 100% stock aside from the aforementioned light overspray on the neck.  Cosmetically, the guitar shows moderate finish checking and assorted tiny nicks and dings from honest use, but no serious or structural wear of any kind.
This classic Guild archtop has a wonderfully sweet sound, plays great, and has a great vintage look!
